I had the privilege of entering ESF’s Master of Landscape Architecture program the same year that Rich returned to teach in 1979. All of the MLA candidates were immediately attracted to this freethinking, fountain of ideas from the West Coast who was quick to join any conversation and elevate it to a higher level. Rich served as my Thesis Chair in 1981. Years later, while we were both eating Original Oyster House Fish Sandwich’s in Pittsburgh, I told him that I was the first student to have him as a Chair and that I was honored to have had that distinction. Characteristically, he could not remember if that was the case or not. I also fondly remember my housemates in Al Lewis’ residence hosting Rich, Susan, Nat and Alice for Easter Brunch at the house in 1982 since all of us were staying in Syracuse that weekend. Nat came dressed as a super hero, complete with a cape, and we all had a great time. I am sure that I am only one of many that have happy memories of Rich and can easily break into a smile when remembering him.

Richard was so integral to my education and professional growth as well as to many ESF students and faculty he interacted with on a nearly daily basis in and out of the campus. He was kind, polite, always with a smile everywhere you'd see him. He always could spare time for you. It was a gift to have known him and he will be sorely missed by not just me but hundreds more.

My deepest condolences to the Hawks family. Richard was chair of the department during my time at ESF and I always found him super supportive and to be a positive influence on all of us. Years later I would run into him at the National ASLA conferences and he always had a friendly smile and was excited to hear about what I was up to. He will be missed! Richard Thank you for contributing so much to the profession and for helping me to get started.

I am privileged to have known and worked with Richard at ESF for 30 years spanning the entirety of his time there as Chairman of the Department of Landscape Architecture. This was a wonderful time to be part of that department and I could not have been luckier than to have had Richard as a mentor, cohort and friend during these years. He was truly a special person and will be missed by those who knew him, especially me.

I was saddened to hear of your passing but your spirit lives on through all of us ESF LA students under your guidance. I am blessed to have been a part of your LA family and so thankful that you were in my time in the ‘90’s. Couldn’t have dreamt to be where I am today without you.

Richard was one of those people who left a mark on the lives that he touched. I always appreciated his support and guidance. I often reflect on one of his favorite expressions, when he was asked, "How's it going Richard?", he would respond in-kind with, "It depends on the subject." As I progress through my life, that statement becomes more and more clear. My condolences to the Hawks family as well as my ESF family! -sam

Richard was one of a kind. He was the Department Chair when I attended the MLA program at ESF and was not only a terrific mentor, but a funny, kind, and inspirational human being. He listened to us and taught us well and even years later remembered us and who we were. He went out of his way to make sure we got the educational experience we deserved and made every effort to encourage us to be our best. His grad parties were always fantastic and we appreciated the time he spent with us. He will be missed. My condolences to his family on behalf of the MLA Class of 2004. Erin (Ernst) Cole.

Susan, Alice and Nat, I am so so sorry to hear about Richard and your dad. I remember seeing him at the bike store when it was on Wescott St. He must have just retired or about to, because we were enthusiastically discussing bikes! May you find some comfort in your memories with him. ♥️

With so so many others, we were so greatly saddened to hear of Richard‘s death. He was a light in the congregation at Plymouth and we shared many happy thoughts about Bob Dylan and many other issues. He was a warm and wonderful friend who gave good advice to me, even two weeks before his death. I will miss him and treasure his memory.
