Obituary of Donald D'Alterio
Donald was born in 1938 in Ridley Park, PA, to Dominic and Maria D’Alterio, first-generation immigrants from Abruzzi, Italy. He grew up with six siblings, including brothers Oswaldo, Roland, and Rudolph, and sisters Olga, Jean, and Clara. Donald attended Media, PA High School, and served as a United States Marine, where he excelled as a strong and talented football quarterback.Donald and his lovely wife Jane moved to Syracuse in 1964, where he was a popular carpenter and general contractor known for his perfectionism and highly skilled craftsmanship. Donald retired in 2009 after a catastrophic fall from a roof. Always busy and on the move, he enjoyed spending time with his family, watching sports, and being outdoors. During retirement, Donald discovered a talent for painting, particularly nature landscapes, and created many beautiful scenes cherished by his family.Many will remember Donald ice skating at Shove Park, rollerblading at Onondaga Lake Park, or walking along the Erie Canal with his beloved son, Mark. Donald will be remembered for his quick wit, razor-sharp sense of humor, charm, tenacity, and commitment to hard work. He believed in being prepared, having the right gear, and understanding that there is a tool for every job.Donald is survived by his wife of 63 years, Jane Ryan D’alterio, his five sons, Scott (Lori), David (Stacy), Steven, Mark, and James (Lisa), his daughter Susan Considine (John), eight grandchildren, five step-grandchildren, one step-grandchild and the timely arrival of his eagerly anticipated first great-grandchild, Lucy Jane, daughter of his treasured granddaughter, Kimmy (Zach), on May 8, 2024.
A Memorial Service Mass will be held on 6/15/2024 at 11:00 am at Holy Family Church, 127 Chapel Drive, Syracuse, NY 13219. A family and friends’ reception will follow at 1:30 pm at the Considine home, 103 Locust Lane, Syracuse, NY 13219.
In place of flowers, donations may be made to the Don D’Alterio Camillus Youth Hockey Travel Player Award Fund. This fund will help to offset the expense of travel play for a deserving youth hockey player annually.
