If Phyllis has moved on, we are all the poorer. I was once her “boss” at VESID, as if that could be possible. I had a new big-shot job and she was stationed just outside my door. I quickly learned that her job was to keep me humble. As she worked along, she would keep track of my day and, without fail, let me know how I was doing. She made me laugh five times a day, but always with just enough respect. She took on many other roles, such as the coffee fund administrator, a task demanding much tact and resolve. She later took another important job as interviewer and assistant to our counselors. She had a great style with our customers, using charm and directness to motivate them for greater things. She could tell them that she had overcome her own hurdles and they could too. We also enjoyed the many stories and adventures of her children and she wanted to hear all about our kids. Day in – day out, she was a great companion. I’m pleased she lived so long. I’m sorry I can’t attend her funeral, but I will hug some loved ones and hoist a toast to her. May she rest in peace.
