Obituary of Nina Kojevny
Nina Kojevny, 90, of Liverpool died peacefully on October 14, 2017, after a long illness.
Nina is survived by her husband of over 70 years, Vasily; daughter and son-in law Tania and Leon Hanouille; granddaughters Michelle Vona (David) and Jennifer Russo (Bill Noon); and great-grandsons Matthew Russo, Leonardo Vona, Marcello Vona, Sammy Noon, and Cristiano Vona.
Nina was born in January 1927 in Russia, and lived in Germany as a young woman where she was married and started her family. In 1952 she immigrated to the United States with her family, and they supported themselves by working on a dairy farm in Wisconsin. In time, the family settled in Syracuse where Nina and Vasily lived and worked, eventually retiring in Fayetteville, NY.
Nina spent many happy years watching grandchildren and great-grandchildren grow, tending to the garden, and preparing meals for her church. Nina’s greatest joys were her “good children” and good food. Nina will be remembered as a loving Baba. She was warm and welcoming to all, and there was always a pot cooking on her stove for any guests that may have come by.
A funeral service is scheduled for Friday 9AM, October 20, at St. Mary’s Russian Orthodox Church on 607 Tecumseh Road in Syracuse. Burial will be at Holy Trinity Monastery, Jordanville, NY. A Panahida will be celebrated on Thursday evening, October 19, at 5 p.m., also at St. Mary’s. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Nina's life. In lieu of flowers, please send contributions to The (Autism) Institute for Communication and Inclusion at Syracuse University, 330 Huntington Hall, Syracuse NY 13244. The family would like to thank the staff at Crouse Hospital Cardiac Unit for their care of Nina.
