Obituary of Mary Ellen Jones

July 13, 2014 Mary Ellen Jones of Syracuse passed away surrounded by her loving children on Sunday after a valiant fight with Billiary Cancer. A graduate of West Genesee High, CCBI and OCC, she worked at Carrier, and retired from Niagara Mohawk/National Grid after 21 years of service, and was a member of Toastmasters Syracuse. Eternally in service to others, she most recently worked at the elementary school at Most Holy Rosary, and was an in home companion. She was on the Board of Directors for EJEDA, a non-profit organization that helps the abandoned, the elderly, AIDS victims and oppressed women in the Congo. She was active in her church, Most Holy Rosary, and was a volunteer counselor for students at Syracuse University during the Gulf War in 1990-1991. Throughout her life, she was known for her kindness, taking in stray dogs, and offering a helping hand or kind words for anyone in need. She is survived by her sister, Marlene Giordano; two children, Gary (Deanna) Jones, Heather Jones-Tucker; two grandchildren, Cameron and Nickolas; nephew, Chris (Tara)Giordano; her adopted Congolese family, the Mihigos; and her faithful dog Dutchess. Memorial Visitation will be held Friday 4 to 7pm Hollis Funeral Home 1105 West Genesee Street Syracuse. Funeral Services: Saturday 10 AM Most Holy Rosary Church with burial following in St. Mary’s Cemetery DeWitt.
