Obituary of Joyce M DePalma

Joyce Marie DePalma, 82, passed away peacefully on January 2, 2025, surrounded by her loving family at St. Joseph’s Hospital. A lifelong resident of Syracuse, NY, Joyce was born to Bart Rich and Ethel Votra Rich, growing up on the city’s west side and attending St. Lucy’s Catholic School.

Joyce enjoyed a fulfilling career in education, earning her master’s degree from the State University of New York at Oswego. For 30 years, she dedicated herself to the Syracuse City School District as a food service instructor at Central Tech, making a lasting impact on the lives of many students.

A passionate fan of Elvis, Joyce loved to travel and cherished memorable casino trips with her close friends Carmen and Donna. However, her greatest joy came from spending time with her family, particularly during the holidays, at Sunday dinners, and countless poolside cookouts.

Joyce was predeceased by her parents and her siblings, Bart, Norma, and Edward Rich. She is survived by her children: Frank W. DePalma, Jr. (Laurie), Edward J. DePalma, Laura L. Vazquez (Bennie), Thomas S. DePalma, Timothy C. DePalma (Michelle), and her adopted daughter Donna Pawlewitz. She also leaves behind twelve beloved grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Remembered for her strength and resilience as a devoted single mother, Joyce's loyalty and dedication to her family were immeasurable. She lived her life according to her own terms and left this world softly, listening to her beloved Elvis's song, “My Way.” Joyce will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

A private burial will take place at St. Mary’s Cemetery in DeWitt, where Joyce will rest eternally alongside her mother and siblings.

The family would like to thank the nursing staff at St. Joseph’s hospital.  The professional and heartfelt care our mother received was exceptional and so very appreciated.
